What Vitamin C Actually Does in the Skin

Why Most Vitamin C Serums Underdeliver
The most commonly used form of Vitamin C in skincare is L-ascorbic acid the pure, active form. It is also the most unstable. L-ascorbic acid oxidizes rapidly when exposed to air, light, and heat, turning the serum yellow, then orange, then brown. An oxidized Vitamin C serum is not just ineffective it can generate free radicals rather than neutralizing them, actively working against the skin.
To be effective, L-ascorbic acid also requires a low pH (below 3.5), which makes it inherently irritating particularly for sensitive, reactive, or post-procedure skin. Many patients who report that “Vitamin C doesn’t work for them” are actually reacting to the irritation of a high-concentration L-ascorbic acid formula, or using a product that has already oxidized.
The solution is not to avoid Vitamin C. It is to use a more stable, better-tolerated derivative one that delivers the same biological activity without the instability and irritation profile of L-ascorbic acid.
Why We Use Encapsulated Ascorbyl Glucoside
Ascorbyl Glucoside is a stable Vitamin C derivative in which the ascorbic acid molecule is bonded to a glucose molecule protecting it from oxidation and allowing it to remain active in the formula over time. When applied to the skin, enzymes cleave the glucose bond and release pure L-ascorbic acid directly at the cellular level, where it exerts its full biological activity.
