Peptides have been in skincare formulations for decades. They appear on labels ranging from drugstore moisturizers to the most expensive serums in the world. And yet most patients and, frankly, many skincare professionals  cannot explain what peptides actually do in the skin, why some peptides are clinically meaningful and others are essentially decorative, or how to evaluate whether a peptide product is worth using.

This post is the clear version. What peptides are, how they work, what Hexapeptide-11 specifically does, and why the Dr. Cris Studio Peptide Serum was formulated the way it was.

What Peptides Actually Are

Peptides are short chains of amino acids  the building blocks of proteins. When amino acids link together in chains of 2 to 50, they form peptides. When they link in longer chains, they form proteins. Collagen, elastin, and keratin  the structural proteins that give skin its firmness, elasticity, and integrity  are all made of amino acid chains.

In the skin, peptides function as biological signals. They are the messages that cells send to each other to coordinate repair, regeneration, and structural maintenance. When the skin is injured, for example, collagen fragments break down into peptides — and those peptides signal fibroblasts to produce new collagen to replace what was lost. The peptide is not the collagen. It is the instruction to make collagen.

This is the mechanism that makes peptides clinically interesting in skincare: by applying specific peptide sequences topically, we can send targeted biological signals to the skin’s cells — instructing them to produce more collagen, improve barrier function, reduce inflammation, or perform other specific regenerative tasks.

Why Not All Peptides Are Equal

The peptide category in skincare is enormous and highly variable in quality. The key factors that determine whether a peptide product is clinically meaningful:

The specific peptide sequence matters. Different peptide sequences send different signals. A peptide that signals collagen production does something fundamentally different from one that signals barrier repair or melanin regulation. Hexapeptide-11: What It Is and What It Does

Hexapeptide-11 is a clinically studied synthetic peptide  a chain of six amino acids  with a well-documented mechanism of action in the skin. It is the primary active in the Dr. Cris Studio Peptide Serum, at a 2% concentration, for specific reasons.

Collagen support. Hexapeptide-11 has been shown to stimulate fibroblast activity  the cells responsible for producing collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in the dermis. By signaling fibroblasts to upregulate production, it supports the structural proteins that give skin its firmness, density, and resilience. This is not a surface effect. It is a change in how the skin’s own cells are behaving.

Skin firmness and elasticity. The collagen and elastin support produced by Hexapeptide-11 translates visibly into improved skin firmness and a more lifted appearance over time. Clinical studies on Hexapeptide-11 have demonstrated measurable improvements in skin elasticity with consistent use — the kind of structural improvement that makes the face read as more youthful without any single feature looking treated.

The Supporting Ingredients: Blueberry and Ginkgo Extracts

Blueberry Extract

Blueberry extract is one of the most antioxidant-rich botanical ingredients available in skincare. Its high concentration of anthocyanins  the pigments responsible for the berry’s deep blue-purple color provides potent free radical neutralization, protecting the skin from the oxidative damage caused by UV exposure, pollution, and metabolic processes.

Free radical damage is one of the primary drivers of accelerated skin aging  degrading collagen, damaging cell membranes, and impairing the skin’s repair capacity. Blueberry extract’s antioxidant activity directly counteracts this process, protecting the collagen and elastin that Hexapeptide-11 is stimulating the skin to produce. The two ingredients work in the same direction: one builds structural proteins, the other protects them.

Ginkgo Extract

Ginkgo biloba extract has a well-documented effect on microcirculation  the flow of blood through the small vessels that supply the skin with oxygen and nutrients. Peptide effects are cumulative. Most patients notice improved radiance and skin texture within 4–6 weeks of consistent daily use. Structural improvements  firmness, elasticity, fine line reduction  develop over 8–12 weeks. Results continue to improve with ongoing use.

Can I use the Peptide Serum with my other Dr. Cris Studio products?
Yes. Apply the Vitamin C Serum first in the morning, then the Peptide Serum. In the evening, apply the Peptide Serum before the Exosome & Niacinamide Serum. Use The Reveal Peel 1–2 evenings per week on its own.
